Ska

Many people still do not know what ska is, let alone J-Ska. Ska itself is a derivative of reggae and punk rock mixed together in various ways. Famous ska bands in the United States include Sublime, Reel Big Fish and Less Than Jake.

The groups just mentioned are all part of “third-wave” ska, which is generally how Japanese ska bands present themselves. Larger groups like Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra have nearly 10 members and feature a large horn section. Others, like Oreskaband or Yum!Yum!Orange are smaller, with only 5 or 6 members.

While ska is not nearly as popular a genre as others out there, it has a following in Japan and is often used for TV shows and commercials.
